Cornwall
& OTHER SW trails and where to find them ...
(NB The numbers for
each map below the mapless trails, have been bookmarked for ease whilst the headings give
links to the relative websites)
The mapless trails include links
to the SAINTS WAY between Padstow and Fowey, St Michael's Way
between Carbis Bay/St. Ives and Marazion and the Wheal Peevor Mine
site and multi use trail. Another
site which is good to refer to is
http://www.intocornwall.com/features/cycling.asp.
Maps for places like Idless Woods just outside Truro can be
purchased from Penrose Outdoor shop on Morlaix Avenue,Truro.
Please
observe the
Countryside Code of Practice
when using any recreational trail.
1.
Cardingham Woods
(and
Haldon Forest)
[If you click on the link above, it will take you to
the Forestry Commission for Cardingham and the map itself will take you to the general Active
Woods page. Haldon Forest will take you to their map site as
well as giving you access to other information about Haldon Forest.]
2. The Cornish Way
in particular, the Clay Trails converging on the Eden Project
[The link above will allow you to download specific
maps and information on the various rides and if you click on the
map, you will go to the Cornwall Centre for Excellence website
although it looks to be somewhat out of date, it does include some
information about the Cornish Way.]
i.
The Saints' Way .. covers approximately 30 miles
/ 48 Km and follows a wonderfully varied c
ourse through valleys,
woodlands, pastures, moors and villages and the visitor can expect
to see some of the most varied and beautiful scenery in the county,
inhabited by countless species of flora and fauna. The surrounding
countryside is dotted with rolling pastures of ancient farmland,
pre-historic remains, ancient bridges, old tracks, quaint churches
and pretty riverside villages.
ii.
St Michael's Way .. The trail stretches from
Lelant (near St. Ives) to Marazion (near Penzance) and stretches
12.5 miles/19.5 km. Visitors can expect to see a number of sights
including the 'Caribbean' style waters around St. Ives, the largest
sand dunes in Cornwall at Gwithian and far-reaching views of West
Penwith at Trencrom Hill.
Throughout Europe there
is a network of pilgrim routes which lead to one of the three most
important places of Christian pilgrimage in the world - the
Cathedral of St James in Santiago de Compostela, North West Spain.
The St Michael's Way Trail is one of these routes. St. Michael's Way
was thought to have been used by pilgrims, missionaries and
travellers, especially those from Ireland and Wales, to avoid
crossing the treacherous waters around Land's End. Dating back
to pre-historic times (10,000BC - 410AD), it is believed that this
route assisted in Cornwall's rapid conversion into a Christian
faith.
In 1987 the Council of Europe decided to promote the
Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Way as a highly symbolic and
significant European cultural route. St Michael's Way has been
developed by Environment and Heritage with the guidance of the
Bredereth Sen Jago (Cornish Pilgrims of St James) and the Cornish
Bureau for European Relations. Pilgrim ways are often
indicated by the traditional Pilgrim's symbol of a scallop shell.
St. Michael's Way has been
signposted and way marked in both directions using a stylistic shell
based on the Council of Europe's sign for pilgrim routes. The
directional arrows are coloured yellow for footpaths, blue for
bridleways and red for byways. Cornwall Council has chosen to use
black arrows on roads.
iii.
Wheal Peevor Mine Site and Multi-use Trail
.. A network of on site tracks and off site trails have been
created, allowing the visitor ready access to the main features of
interest within the Wheal Peevor Site, but importantly also allowing
Wheal Peevor to be linked with the Coast to Coast Trail, Wheal Rose
and Redruth. Bespoke granite and timber way markers mark the off
site trail routes, and a series of interpretation panels placed at
particular features of interest guide the visitor around the site
itself.
Throughout the construction life of the project, a series of guided
walks were held on site covering archaeology, ecology and
mineralogy, together with several creative workshops – something
that it is hoped will continue now that the site is finally open to
all.
3.

Although the trails shown are primarily
walks, if you take your bike, the forestry commission are happy for
you to make up your own route using the many forest roads although
they also ask you ride with consideration, slowing down for both
walkers and horse riders. And after a busy day exploring the woods,
relax in the picnic area down by the river - you can even cook up a
feast on one of the BBQs which are free to use!

Ferry Services
There are a number of ferries in
the county which all provide services to passengers on foot,
whilst a few take vehicles as well.
Some operate all the year round
on a timetable that varies with the seasons and some are
services that do not operate during the winter months. Bikes can
generally be carried on all ferries. On foot ferries, however,
with smaller capacities, if a large number of bikes need to be
carried it is advisable to ring ahead to the operator to
confirm.
