IAM Cycle Training

Whatever your ability as a cyclist, the IAM provides practical on-road training to help you gain the essential skills and confidence to cycle safely on the UK’s busy roads.

With access to fully accredited, experienced instructors right across the UK, the IAM can help more people than ever to gain the essential requirements to be a better cyclist.  Do you cycle or want to cycle more often?  Then we can help you get more enjoyment out of your cycling and be safer on the road. The UK has seen a surge in the popularity of cycling in the last ten years, buoyed by the many benefits it can bring including:

  • Improved health and fitness
  • Financial gain (reduce your car and fuel costs)
  • Care for the environment
  • With this increasing popularity set to continue, many more people are trying cycling or want to cycle more often.

The IAM is dedicated to helping make cyclists safer on the road, encouraging more motorists to take up cycling and making the roads safer for all users. Here you will find information concerning the work of the IAM in cycling, together with details of how to benefit from both the practical, on-road training and associated products and benefits offered by the IAM.

Is cycle training even for me?

In short, yes! Whether you are new to cycling or a frequent rider looking for those essential hints and tips, a training session will be of real benefit to you. The 3 available levels allow for flexibility, meaning you can pick and choose which level is most appropriate for you.

With so many instructors available, sessions can be organised near your home, at work or perhaps in your favourite park!

    What is involved?

    CycleCheck

Delivered in a quiet off-road environment, CycleCheck covers all of the essentials including bike control, braking, use of gears and signalling. It is ideal for the new or returning cyclist requiring basic skills and greater confidence.  Typical duration: 1 hour

    CycleRide

Once you can demonstrate good bike control, CycleRide introduces cycling safely on-road. By using quieter roads, this level aims to enhance the rider’s awareness through practising manoeuvres and negotiating with traffic. Typical duration: 1-1½ hours

    CycleRidePlus

Building on skills already practiced and for those able to consider an independent cycle journey, CycleRide+ prepares cyclists for more complex challenges. By riding on busier roads, cyclists learn to cope with most road and traffic conditions, the end result being someone able to commute to work in confidence. Typical duration: 1½ hours

And did you know that you can train with friends and colleagues?

Each of the 3 levels can be tailored wherever possible to your requirements. Training in pairs or small groups is certainly possible where riders are of similar abilities, allowing for friends and colleagues to sign up together – sharing the enjoyment and the price of the session!

    How much does it cost?

There are local differences in the price of cycle training and therefore prices can be quoted on request. Typically, a 1:1 hour-long session would cost around £30-40, but this can be reduced per person if the training is delivered to more than one person at a time.

All training adheres to The National Standards for Cycle Training, which is the only recognised standard for cycle training in the UK (sometimes known as “Bikeability”). All instructors are accredited to teach to this standard and are CRB-checked.
