The off road
(MTB) training programme is led by
Steve Masi,
now he has formalised
his considerable expertise under the
CTC/OTC MTB Instructor Training programme and duly qualified.
And just across the
border in Devon (Teignmouth) right on the edge of Dartmoor, is
Martyn
Laxton, also an MTB Trail Leader.
It will be operated under the
Bespoke Activities Cooperative Scheme
in conjunction with RSCT.

The CTC's new Off Road
3 tier training courses are aimed primarily at beginners and novices,
specifically targeting techniques to break down the core skills needed in
mountain biking. Sessions will involve safety checks, health checks, bike
clothing checks, warms ups, main set, cooling downs, evaluations and setting
realistic goals to aim for in any subsequent sessions.
Naturally things
such as the age, ability, skills, fitness and size of any groups are all factors
taken into consideration along any equipment (bikes) being used plus of course,
the weather forecast and condition of both the ground and the trails are all
very much a part of the risk assessment process. Prices start from £20 pp
per hour with discount given for groups.
Prior to the
session you will be asked what exactly you want to achieve from the
training and any previous experience you have off road/cycling if
any so that sessions can be planned and tailored realistically, to
help you achieve your specific goals. Where there are a group
of people training together with mixed abilities, then activities to
suit everyone would need to be prepared prior to the commencement of
the session.

Holiday activity groups sessions
are available on request - Weekend sessions
can also be arranged on request, the cost of which for both is available on
application. Generally speaking courses are based on a one day
training programme.
For Individual 1:1 Tuition the
methods used are tailor made to your individual needs although the same
principles will apply vs. activities for a group to achieve the same
objectives. Also we take as much or as little time as any one
individual needs., there are no maximums as everyone is different.

There are different types of awards to aim for .. |
|
The original 5 Right Track Award Levels (covering aspects of mountain biking beyond just riding) and the 3 Wheelie Award Levels (which are just about riding skills, starting from a level that everyone who can stay upright on a bike can achieve) are currently under review so watch this space! Meanwhile .. |
|
The Go-MTB Awards extend to cover aspects of mountain biking beyond just riding. Go-mtb has five levels, each split into four parts: Riding skills - The riding section, develops good riding practice from starting, stopping, and being comfortable and safe when riding at level 1 through to jumps, line choice and pumping at level 5. Each level progresses and extends your riding skills ensuring your feel confident in the environment, and are able to practice the skill on your rides. Sharing the outdoors is all about the environment we use when we ride. It's about how we consider others, our impacts and what our rights and responsibilities are in the natural environment we use. First aid ensures that you know what to do, not just if there is an injury, this section also includes how to help make the area and people safe. At higher levels, this section does include a first aid course. Being independent and self supporting .. This section of each award covers eating, drinking, trailside maintenance, where to go and what to wear and carry. Each section at each level enables the gaining of a certificate (so 20 certificates all together) when you have achieved it. Your handbook will also include a section to record your riding experiences as you build your skills and capitalise on the opportunities that Go-mtb presents. Go-mtb Awards are designed primarily for children, young people and young adults, but are equally applicable to groups of more mature riders |
