Cycling with Cycling Projects

These photos are primarily from training as a
Cycling Projects 'Wheels for All Ride Leader' in Bristol in August 2010,
followed up by the launch of the Bristol Wheels for All Project next
day. It is something I have been hoping to do for many months so
that hopefully we can get the ball rolling here in Cornwall as well .. now
perhaps people will have a better understanding of exactly what it is I am
aiming to achieve, for the many Cornish residents who have a variety of problems
that prevent them from being able to cycle., well no more if we can only
persuade the council to host it and local businesses to perhaps donate a bike or
two, as they are rather expensive ..
However the last time Lord George called me
prior to his death, he dictated this quote to me which Lady George has
graciously given her permission for us to be able to use: .."I
remember when the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed
Balls, visited the Sir James Smith School in Camelford and he specifically
referred to the provision of sport outside of schools that must benefit the
community as a whole, including those with disabilities. The Wheels for All
Centre in Cornwall is a wonderful way of addressing that objective and I
wholeheartedly support the project. I hope that the commercial sector in
Cornwall will feel able to contribute to the funding of these specialised
bikes."
Since then
Lady George has also offered to take up
the baton and continue to support our endeavours and naturally, we accepted!
As a result of there now being one trained ride leader in county, we are now one
step closer to achieving our objective and opening cycling up.
There are in fact already a handful of
bikes in Cornwall at the Delaware Outdoor Education Centre on the edges of
Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor .. these latest pix are of their bikes which the Centre
Manager and I had a little play on, whilst figuring out how they work.
This was in the rain and something of a 'white out' in terms of mist but given
the centre's location, that is not really any great surprise - It was completely
the opposite to Bristol a couple of weeks back but a little water never hurt
anyone!
The evidence of what can be achieved if All Ability Cycling is opened up more and awareness raised of the possibilities ..
Siblyback Lake with the bikes .. something for everyone including watersports and a Tramper
Martin having taken delivery of his new Boma, with which he will do just that!
These are the Top End bikes that will be at the launch on 5th March
This is my friend Caroline who 20 years ago had a major brain injury as a result of a car accident but can still cycle using a 3 wheeler recumbent.
The Boma is brilliantly engineered .. getting into it or out again is so much easier than any of the others but that is reflected in the price too!
Must come down again .. the Boma really is quite amazing and a brilliant bit of engineering!
