It doesn't matter who you are, if you are an instructor, the manager of an outdoor education establishment, a carer, teacher or work for one of the agencies that we are also talking to, if you want to get involved then please get in touch. If you wish to contact us to take up one of the vacant positions on the committee, please do get in touch with our secretary via secretary@cycleability.org.uk To register your interest in becoming involved during events or training as coaches/ride leaders, please either email us at volunteering@cycleability.org.uk and put REGISTERING INTEREST in the subject line. Please advise me in what capacity you wish to be involved, so that we can set up a data base with your details logging it for future reference. You can also send a text on 07762 493662 or get in touch with Steve Hillman, the Disability Sports Development Officer for the Cornwall Sports Partnership .. His email address is shillman@cornwall.gov.uk and his contact phone nos. 07837 311539 or 01872 323349 The bikes shown below are already in Cornwall at the Delaware Outdoor Education Centre .. Their contact, should you need them yourself is either via email at delaware@cornwall.gov.uk or by calling them on 01822 833885 although being an Outdoor Ed. Centre that might be a little hit and miss if the staff have a group staying.
Training is very important as not only do we have issues such as health and safety to consider or risk assessments that need to be done but we also need to think about the people we are working with which will affect both of the above. If you're running a session in a park, there will be other people there walking their dogs or just going out with their children (bearing in mind a child is instinctively curious) which need to be taken into consideration. Other factors include the weather and time of year which will dictate when during the day, sessions can be run. Things like long summer evenings vs. shorter autumn/winter hours and school holidays also need to be taken into account when deciding what can be offered as indeed, does the availability of volunteers. One also has to consider which bikes are suitable for whom. And if it is broken down to be stored in a small space, then you need to be able to put it back together again as well as know how each one works. For example, some have Dutch styled brakes vs. others which have dual brake levers on the handle bars or a parking brake lever. Would you know how to do all that as I know I didn't .. this is a serious and very important learning curve for all of us! Lastly and equally importantly is how we can help those who come and ride, to progress as their confidence levels increase. It could be encouraging social interaction, sharing and communication, it could also be in terms of taking responsibility for themselves as their confidence grows. It could be a case of starting out on four wheels and transferring onto three, before eventually having the confidence to try balancing and going down to two. Perhaps as their levels of confidence rise, they want to cycle another lap because they are gaining more energy through taking exercise or having learned to pedal again in a side by side tandem, now want to try and go it alone .. There are so many variables and you really do have to think OUTSIDE of the box! Ride leaders generally, because of the HSE issues and risk assessments, tend to be qualified instructors however there are always exceptions to the rule. Organising these sessions though does require one to think on your feet and to hit the ground running! Would you know how to match up your clients to these bikes shown below? There are a few clues on the previous page ..
There will be a small charge for training which depending on whether we get a central booking system set up, will either be one day or if we all have to pitch in and manage booking between us, then it would be a two day course which will cover the management side of it as well as the practical aspect. Prices start at approx. £95 per person which we hope to be able to get funding for, however some people will be happy to finance their own training which means more money left in the pot for other aspects of the project. |
